Students earn tuition, prepare for college and for work in Cristo Rey program

OVERVIEW

According to Father Tim Manatt, S.J., the Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Minneapolis operates a unique work/study program that helps prepare low-income and immigrant students for college and the workforce. The school, which opened in 2007, is part of a national network of 26 Cristo Rey schools, all of which are Catholic and college preparatory, include a corporate work/study component and serve exclusively low-income families. Of the 320 students at the Minneapolis school, 97 percent are students of color and 94 percent qualify for free or reduced-cost lunch.

After a summer orientation to workplace behavior and skills, all Cristo Rey students, freshmen through seniors, work one day a week and one Friday a month during the school year at an entry-level job. Most jobs are at Twin Cities businesses, with a few at nonprofit organizations. Four students share one position and each student earns wages that pay more than half the $13,500 cost of his or her education. Families also make an average contribution to the school of $850 per year. The remaining costs of the students' education are covered through donations to the school.

Manatt, president of the school, reports that 95 percent of the student's employers say the students meet or exceed their expectations, bringing energy and vitality to the workplace. The work experience exposes the students to different careers, broadens their perspective on the world, helps them get to know themselves well through formal work evaluations, and teaches them to become advocates for themselves.

Cristo Rey closely follows and supports its graduates, 75 percent of whom are now in college. Manatt says most are doing well, many better than their ACT scores might predict, which he attributes both to the school's intensive academic emphasis on core subjects and to skills the students have learned in the workplace.

1. Topic is of value. Though I am not Catholic, our beliefs have fundamental differences, faith based education is very important to the survival of our country. Whether it is [politically correct] or not, faith and trust in God and not the government should be the basis for our lives.

2. Further study warranted. It looks like this is a program that is working; keep the ball rolling.

4. Jobs should be provided. The best way to learn how to work is to work. When I was a young man, McDonald's was my first entry level job and to this day the lessons learned there are still valid. It is also very important to educate young people to understand just what "entry level" job means.

5. Work provides valuable exposure. Some people know from a very young age just what they want to do with their lives, and that is great for them. But, I believe that is a small percentage. Only through getting into the work force and experiencing life's ups and downs can most of us figure out where we "fit".

6. Post-graduation support needed. Leaving high school is like going to sleep in Fargo and waking up in New York City.

1. Topic is of value. The interview demonstrated that a specific model for education coupled with internship or on-the-job experience can and does work.

2. Further study warranted. This model seems to be working and could hold promise if translated to other organizations. Other interviews should address how the model can be applied to other systems and also what the barriers [might be] to expanding the model to other school systems.

3. More could be college-ready. Would like to have more specifics regarding the progress and end result. The basic interview was very positive in this direction.

4. Jobs should be provided. The model suggests that this can be very beneficial and that broader application will have significant payoff. Further assessment [of] ability to balance education needs with on-the-job experience should be key.

5. Work provides valuable exposure. This can be a very useful approach that links the student with the real world, giving an experience that is not often available in the education and work world today.

6. Post-graduation support needed. The follow up approach, if not constraining, can be very helpful to the student particularly if there is no previous or related family follow-up or encouragement.
